Dr. Douglas J. Fouts

Dr. Douglas J. Fouts was appointed Interim Vice President and Dean of Research in January 2012.  He was Associate Dean of Research from July 2006 until January 2012.  He has served as a Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 1990 and holds a secondary appointment in the Space Systems Academic Group.  He has industrial experience as a design engineer with Burroughs Corp. (now Unisys) and The Aerospace Corp.  He has consulted for numerous other companies, holds 6 U.S. patents, and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of California.

The research interests of Prof. Fouts include VLSI and system-on-a-chip design, reconfigurable computing for high performance and high reliability, and hardware trust and security.  He teaches courses in integrated circuit design, computer architecture, trustworthy hardware, and electronic circuits.  He has over 40 scholarly publications in peer reviewed journals and conferences and is a winner of the Menneken Faculty Award for Excellence in Scientific Research.  He has won the Outstanding Research Achievement Award from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and he has won both the Outstanding Research Achievement Award  and the Outstanding Instructional Performance Award from the Space Systems Academic Group.

Dr. Fouts received his Ph.D. in 1990 and his M.S. in 1984, both in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara.  He received his B.A. in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1980.  He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Radio Relay League.
