NPS Hones Cyber Defense Skills During CDX 2008

Scott Coté, a senior lecturer in the Center for Information Security Studies and Research at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) assists participating students during the 8^th annual Cyber Defense Exercise (CDX) 2008. CDX 2008 was sponsored by the National Security Agency and put NPS and many other Department of Defense schools on the receiving end of over 1,000 cyber attacks spanning a week to test each school’s ability to protect against an onslaught of cyber assaults. LCS Thesis Wins OR Graduate Research Prize

Naval Postgraduate School student and Surface Warfare Officer Lt. Benjamin “Ben” Abbott, center, has won the prestigious Military Operations Research Society (MORS) Stephen A. Tisdale Graduate Research Award for the March 2008 graduating class.  The coveted prize recognizes high-quality NPS thesis work of immediate or near-term value to U.S. or allied military operations, readiness or training “whose anticipated benefits are very great.”  Abbott’s thesis, “Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mission Packages: Determining the Best Mix,” was chosen by a faculty panel following a formal competition in which he and other finalists briefed their theses in Glasgow Hall, Mar. 13.  Abbott used computer simulation, data farming and other analytic techniques to determine the squadron size and composition for the Navy’s planned fleet of “green water” ships designed to counter the complex threats in coastal areas.  Dean of the Graduate School of Operational and Information Sciences Peter Purdue, left, and Abbott’s thesis adviser Prof. Tom Lucas presented the award.  U.S. Navy photo by Javier Chagoya  Full story.

NPS Receives President’s Partnership Award from Hartnell College

NPS Super Computing Stays On Top

Aura of Optimism Tangible at 49th Board of Advisors Meeting

The aura of optimism from the inauguration of President Daniel Oliver (right) and Executive Vice President and Provost Leonard Ferrari (center) was tangible at the 49th meeting of the Naval Postgraduate School Board of Advisors (BOA), held at NPS Apr. 22-23.  The entire NPS leadership team, including the president, provost and deans, actively took part in the sessions. “The Naval Postgraduate School Board represents a terrific cross section of military and academic expertise,” said the BOA Chairman the Hon.
