About the Program
The Department of National Security Affairs and the Graduate School of International Policy and Management at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) have established an exchange program that allows students at each institution to take classes at the other. For NSA students who wish to take advantage of this opportunity, the following ground rules apply.
Our exchange program with MIIS operates on a "space-available" basis, so you will only be able to take classes that are not fully subscribed by MIIS students. If you decide you would like to take a course at MIIS, it will be good to have some alternatives in mind in case your first choice is full.
The program is confined to courses taught in the Graduate School of International Policy and Management. Courses in foreign languages, translation, and so on are excluded. The MIIS course schedule can be found here.
MIIS operates on a semester system. Its academic calendar (which can be found here) does not match up perfectly with ours. In general, though, the MIIS Fall Semester begins in late August (and conforms more or less to our Fall Quarter); Spring Semester begins in late January (and conforms more or less to our Winter Quarter).
Because this is an exchange program, you do not need to "transfer" credit from MIIS to NPS. Nor do MIIS courses count against the amount of credit you are allowed to transfer to NPS from other institutions. To get credit for a MIIS course, you simply get a copy of your transcript from the MIIS registrar's office, showing the completed course and the grade. Take the transcript to the NPS registrar's office, which will record the credit here at NPS. One MIIS course equals one NSA course.
If you want a MIIS course to count as a curricular elective, you must confirm the arrangement with your Academic Associate before you take the course. MIIS courses cannot be substituted for required NSA courses.
You can take a maximum of two (2) courses at MIIS during your stay at NPS. The program can accommodate a maximum of twelve NSA students at a time, which is not normally an issue.
Point of Contact
NSA students who wish to take courses at MIIS should get in touch with Ms. Sara Stolt in the NSA office (email@example.com), who will assist in making the appropriate arrangements.
