  Sakai LMS Help

The Sakai Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE) is an open source, web based learning management system which allows Instructors and Students to store and retrieve course material, communicate with each other and track student progress through the course.  In addition to course sites, the CLE can host project sites where project members can share documents and collaborate.  The CLE is accessible from any web connected device using your NPS user name and password.

Getting There

  • To access the CLE go to
    • If you are a registered NPS student, login using your standard NPS credentials
    • If you are a Non-NPS guest participant, login using your email address. (See 'Guest Access' below)
  • if you are not able to login, contact the Sakai Help Desk at 831-656-2020 or at

Guest Access

Non-NPS users must be invited by a course instructor or project organizer to access the CLE.  More details about how to access the CLE once you've been invited is available in the Guest Access Overview.

Once logged in, your Home space provides navigation to all of your course and project sites.  Larger size image

A Student Introduction Video is also available for assistance with logging in.

CLE training and additional information is available for students and faculty on the NPS Wiki information site.

Faculty - To request a new Sakai project or course site, please visit HERE or HERE  to create your request in our ticket system, JIRA.

The CLE is organized into tools. Below is a list of tools and a brief description of each. All tools may not be available in all sites.

Overview Course dashboard including course description, recent announcements, discussion, and chat items.
Announcements View time-critical information about your Course
Assignments View assignments and submit responses online
Calendar View assignment due dates and other events of interest
Chat Room Participate in real-time, written conversations with other course participants concurrently connected
Drop Box Allows private file-sharing between instructors and students
Forums Engage in written conversations, not in real time
Gradebook Compute and store grades, students can check grades
Lessons View sequenced coursework
Help Access help documentation
Membership View courses in which you are a member. Located in Home for NPS users.
Messages Send email to course participants
News Display an RSS feed from an external site
Podcasts Create and get URL for site podcasts
Polls Take course polls
Preferences Set your personal preferences, such as time zone and archived sites
Profile Set and make public personal information, including pictures
Resources Store and retrieve course documents
Roster View list of course participants
Site Editor View/Edit site properties and participants. Students may view and join groups.
Site Statistics (instructors only) View statistics on your site by user, event or resource
Syllabus Course syllabus
Tests & Quizzes View and take tests and quizzes and automatically feed the results to the Gradebook
Web Content Include external website content in your site
Wiki Collaboratively edit simple web pages
