Safety Acquisitions

The following is a list of keywords or and topics that would likely require review from the Safety Office. If there is any doubt, email safety@nps.edu

Common items that require Safety Office Review in KFS:

The following is a list of the most common items that requires one of the Commodity Codes for Safety Review. This is not a complete listing. A more detailed listing of keywords and topics can be found below on this page. If there is any doubt, email safety@nps.edu

  • All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (requires “SAFETY” Commodity Code): this including hardhats, steel toe boots, eye protection, hearing protection, and respirators (including disposable dust masks.)
  • All Cleaning Supplies (HAZMAT Commodity Code): These items require review by the Hazmat Program Manager for inventory supply and Authorized Use Reasons. Many common cleaning supplies have special handling (requiring PPE) and storage requirements.
  • ALL batteries and items or equipment that contain batteries that are purchased at NPS, must be marked with the Commodity Code “HAZMAT” in Kalui Financial System (KFS) so that the appropriate reviews can occur and any additional actions can be taken to ensure regulatory compliance. Proper disposal procedures need to be understood by the end user at the point of acquisition to ensure complete life-cycle management.
  • All Lasers (requires “LASER” Commodity Code)
  • All Equipment that are Radio Frequency Sources (transmitters) (“SAFETY” Commodity Code)
  • All Sources of Radiation (“RADIATION” Commodity Code)
  • ANYTHING EXPLOSIVE! (Use the “SAFETY” Commodity Code)

ANYTHING THAT…

  • Flies
  • Is an Unmanned Vehicle
  • Is a Watercraft
  • Generates a large amount of Noise
  • Is a vibration hazard (power hammers, impact wrenches, hand-held grinders, etc.)
  • Lifts or is used to Lift (weight handling, equipment, and rigging gear)
  • Used to control hazardous energy (lock out / tag out equipment)
  • Is used in welding

Possible Reasons for the Safety Office to Disapprove an Item in KFS

It is very rare that the Safety Office might disapprove an item. We will work with the end user to provide compliance recommendations or suggest safer alternatives and make note of this in the notes section of KFS. However, sometimes the requisition needs to be disapproved and restarted. Common reasons include:

  • Non-NIOSH approved Respirators (Including Dust Masks)
  • Non-ANSI compliant Eyewear
  • Requesting HAZMAT without going through the HAMAT Rep
  • Inappropriate hearing protection for the task.
  • If there is safer or more environmental friendly options available.
  • There is unneeded or extra HAZMAT already on campus that can be reutilized elsewhere instead of purchasing new HAZMAT.
  • Country of Origin Reasons.
  • Assuring product meets appropriate safety standards testing (Such as UL).
