Back Littoral Oceanography for Mine Warfare

Fiscal Year 2009

Department Oceanography
Investigator(s) Chu, Peter C.
Sponsor Naval Oceanographic Office (Navy)
Summary The proposal includes two major tasks: (1) determination of periodicity for MIW route surveys with consideration of influences by natural forcing functions (storms, climo, etc.), and influences by human activity, (2) development of analogous CONUS areas that are environmentally "analogous" to a potential operational area of interest). These CONUS sites would then be useable for more rigorous operational training and evaluation, and (3) underwater bomb trajectory prediction for the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) Assault Breaching System (JABS) in the very shallow water (VSW). This research will be conducted in collaboration with NAVO scientists (Ronald Betsch, Bobbie Thompson, Peter Flescher, Darrel Smith, and James Hammack).
