Summary This project will examine ship board sensitized Al alloy 5456 and study desensitization process. LCDR. Kevin Gamble will be working for his Master's Thesis on this project. The main objective of this research is to study the metallurgical properties of Aluminum-Magnesium (Al-Mg) alloys in order to develop repair techniques for these materials used in Naval ships. Metallurgical characterization techniques will be used to characterize the effects of heat treatment on sensitized Al-Mg alloys. The results of this research will aid in determining the validity of heat treatment as a repair technique for shipboard use. Previous work has identified heat treatment as a promising method to reverse the sensitization of Al-Mg alloys.
