Summary This research project aims to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to analyze and improve outcome-based education programs (OBE) by focusing on competencies. We intend to develop case studies pertaining to the Navy Education Enterprise (NEE), aimed at validating and testing various AI models in support to the analysis of existing and required warfighters¿ competencies associated to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary OBE programs in the Navy. We have three main objectives: Improve OBE programs driven by warfighters¿ needed competencies; enhance competency search within OBE programs; and recommend OBE programs changes or customizations driven by identified needs. We will address these goals focusing on three research questions: Are AI models able to classify competencies effectively within OBE programs? How accurately do AI models query the presence of specific competencies in OBE programs? To what extent can AI recommend rearrangements in current OBE programs that will address specific needed competencies? Case studies¿ data availability and quality are crucial factors for this research success as well as clear taxonomy of competencies. We will study AI-models and associated models¿ parameters to fine tuning them in an attempt to reach the necessary accuracy required for our specific cases studies. The proposed research offers several benefits, including the ability to adapt OBE programs to evolving Navy¿s demands and expectations for education in a reliable and systematic manner. The reliance on AI will not eliminate the human factor in the decision-making process, particularly important in the education sector. By addressing the research questions and considering the benefits and drawbacks of different AI solutions, we seek to contribute to the continuous transformation of education and provide reliable and efficient support for Navy¿s OBE programs development and competencies alignment.
