Summary |
The proposed Western Pacific expansion of the highly successful PRE-Depression Investigation of Cloud-Systems in the tropics (PREDICT-2010) experiment, hereafter known as PREDICT-West, is a focused observational field campaign to investigate both the structure and evolution of tropospheric wave-like disturbances in the tropical Western Pacific during boreal summer, and the subsynoptic-and mesoscale processes operating within the quasi-closed cyclonic "gyre-pouch" of various synoptic-wave precursors in this region that contribute to the formation of tropical depressions. Although primarily of a basic research nature, the fruits of this study should stimulate synergetic activities including the improvement of numerical weather forecasts of tropical cyclone formation in the Western Pacific region, a region of particular interest for the DoD and U.S. Navy in particular. |
