Back Optimized Fuel Scheduling for Military Sealift Command's Combat Logistics Force

Summary On any maritime staff, a considerable amount of time is dedicated to logistics planning in support of Naval operations. Military Sealift Command (MSC) operates the Combat Logistics Force (CLF), the primary means by which Navy vessels are supported while deployed. Current practices used by the logistics planning teams are, for the most part, manual in nature, reliant on the expertise of individual members of the staff, and manpower intensive. Additionally, the processes in place provide minimal opportunity to capture commodity consumption and transfer data that are the outcomes of the logistics schedule execution. This part is critical as there is no means by which efficiency and effectiveness of CLF employment can be routinely evaluated. With these concerns in mind, MSC sought assistance from Naval Postgraduate School in automating the scheduling process with an emphasis on reducing the operational costs of the CLF through improvement in efficient employment of these assets. To meet that objective, NPS is undertaking research efforts to develop a desk-top, operational planning solution that will generate optimal replenishment schedules for the CLF.
