Summary Metamaterials have novel features of redirecting electromagnetic (EM) radiation that have been demonstrated at low power levels. It is not known to what extent the performance of metamaterials is degraded by high-power EM radiation. The nonlinear EM response of materials is characterized by susceptibility tensors. We propose to investigate theoretically whether nonlinear susceptibility tensors can be calculated for metamaterials.
