Summary During FY12-FY13 our NPS team grew a hybrid based on carbon nanofibers (CNF) and inorganic fullerene (IF-WS2) structures, generating homogeneous dispersions of the components at the nanoscale. The microstructure of these novel hybrids was studied and the mechanical properties of the foams and their epoxy composites tested. Failure modes were investigated and design against failure placed for consideration.
This proposal aims to continue the work, we suggest to scale up the process to generate samples of at least 5 x 5 x 1/4 inch layers. We will accomplish such task by designing and building a new mold to produce the samples and changing the gas flow conditions. We will then generate the CNF/IFWS2 samples and test them for shock dissipation. We propose to use a shock tube to determine the shock attenuation when using nitrogen and helium as means to produce the pressure differential. We plan to adapt the testing system for these particular case, adding the number of sensors to diagnose the outcome of the test.
