Summary There is growing agreement among senior US civilian and military officials who have been involved in formulating or implementing national-security and military strategies and policies relating to China that, overall, China is becoming an increasingly important player on the global national-security scene. Publicly available US national-security documents, including from the US-China commission, have pointed to the potential challenges with the rise of China as an important player and the need for a better understanding of them, their behaviors, decision making processes, etc.
The Office of Net Assessment has done some important work in advancing our knowledge of China over the past few decades. This project will contribute to this knowledge by focusing on work by Nathan Leites. In particular, the project aims to put together a source book and an inventory based on Leites notes for a book on China he was working on. This will be useful both for understanding some of the pre-history of the intellectual history of the Office of Net Assessment's current China research; but also in itself as a valuable collection of material on themes important to understanding the decision making and behaviors of China today. Moreover, while Leites' work on the Soviets is well known (e.g., "Soviet Style in War" and "Soviet Style in Management"), by putting together the source book of Leites work on China, that may be one steps towards doing similar seminal works on China ("China Style in War" and "China Style in Management"). Such collections might improve our understanding of China significantly.
