Summary With the introduction of normobaric hypoxia training systems to the Aviation Survival Training Centers, there is a need to provide an operationally-relevant way of keeping trainees engaged in a relevant task while they are oxygen levels decrease to induce hypoxia symptoms.

This research will systematically gather and analyze data on specific tasks performed by aircrew of Class 2/4 aircraft as needed to develop a common set of platform-independent, tablet-based tasks to be performed by individuals undergoing hypoxia training. These tasks will consider the psychomotor, cognitive, and/or affective components of individual and collective loading. Depending on the task analysis, there may be different versions of the software depending on the station/position within the aircraft that the aircrew occupies (i.e. a load master version versus a navigator version). The software that will be developed, tested, and evaluated for use within a Normobaric Hypoxia Training Environment as a representative activity for aircrew experiencing hypoxia.

The ultimate objective for this effort is to develop a job/task-relevant distraction task for Class 2/4 aircrew to engage in while undergoing normobaric hypoxia training.

Research deliverables include: 1. Report containing background information, results of the task analysis, training system design recommendations, software design approach, and operating instructions. 2. Conference presentation/poster. 3. Software
