Summary Our 2014 research on the human factors impacting the use of energy indicate that situational context is a major determinant of energy efficient behavior. Energy use behaviors are influenced by mission requirements of the scenario, by procedural rules, and by the tools available. At the same time, personal factors affect a person's willingness to engage in new behaviors or to adopt new technologies. When we look to change behavior, there are number of organizational solutions to decreasing energy use. These solutions include policy, procedure, education, culture, and technology solutions.
This study will investigate the impact of scenario-based design and emerging affordances on the adoption of new monitoring and information display technologies. This research will develop a model for evaluating the effectiveness of gauges, meters, and information displays in reducing energy use. Using this model, we will do a case comparison of industry best practices.
