Back X-Ray Residual Stress Measurements on a Littoral Combat Ship
Fiscal Year | 2014 |
Division | Graduate School of Engineering & Applied Science |
Department | Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering |
Investigator(s) | Brewer, Luke N. |
Sponsor | Naval Surface Warfare Center-Carderock Division (Navy) |
Summary | We will perform x-ray residual stress measurements on structural members of one of the LCS-class vessels. These measurements will indicate possible areas of concern for stress corrosion and fatigue cracking. This information will be used, along with other data, to determine whether or not ultrasonic impact treatment will be required to prevent cracking. We will perform x-ray residual stress measurements on aluminum deck structures and inside the mission bay area. The funding for this work will cover labor for one week of measurements and basic travel for Prof. Brewer, his student (LT Fakhouri), and their equipment from the Naval Postgraduate School to San Diego and back. The total amount required from NSWC-CD is $6,000. |
