Back Handheld Devices for Rapid Request Generation

Summary There are several approaches to developing a system to assist UFOs call for resources. Once could develop a dedicated device for the purpose. Such a device would essentially be used to execute call for resources only. There are obviously a number of trade-offs of taking such an approach, primary among them being high cost, addition of yet another device to the user's already heavy load, additional battery issues for such a device, and training to use such a device. The advantages of this approach could be a dedicated and tuned user interface for better usability, and possibly, higher efficiency. A second approach would be to develop the system such that it could run on a number of COTS handheld devices. This approach would be significantly cheaper in overall cost, and add a critical functionality to an existing device. With careful design it could provide the advantages of a dedicated device. We plan to pursue a COTS handheld device-based approach for this project. Our key issues for this project are as follows:
- What is the best software architecture for a COTS handheld device-based system designed to assist an untrained forward observer to call for resources?
- Which sensing modalities of current COTS mobile devices be used to facilitate rapid request generation?
- What measures can be taken to prevent errors in the generation of call for resources?
