Summary CIRPAS participation in three field projects that are to take place in 2016 is proposed here. The first of the three is an intensive field study associated with the CASPER experiment. CIRPAS will use its instrumented Twin Otter to measure exchange rates of momentum, heat and humidity near the sea surface, and characterize the temperature and humidity structure and profiles in the lower troposphere over the study area off the North Carolina outer banks. Additionally CIRPAS will set up a land-based aerosol characterization measurement station on the Duck pear, just above the surf zone. In the second project, which takes place in the marine boundary layer off the California coast, the Twin Otter will measure aerosol and cloud properties in addition to dynamic parameters in a study of stratocumulus dissipation and drizzle development. The third project focuses on validation of visual range model used as a tactical tool by the Navy. The airplane will be equipped with FLIR optical sensor and imager, in addition to aerosol spectrometers, three color nephelometer, a soot photometer and turbulence sensors to measure detection range and optical resolution of the FLIR system, and characterize the optical properties of the aerosol and turbulence in the signal path. The objectives are to explain variability in transmissivity of electromagnetic waves in the marine environment, formation of large clearings in a persistent stratocumulus cloud deck, and define accuracy of model diagnostics, respectively.
