Summary There is a large body of work in the area of personal protective equipment (PPE) performance; some of it very recent. For example, in 2015 the Marine Corps Force Integration Office (MCFIO) sponsored two studies on adapting combat arms equipment for use by female Marines. Both studies touched on the fit, form, and function of PPE. Further, live experiments sponsored by MCFIO offer insight on the interactions among PPE configuration, a Marine's anthropometric attributes, and task performance. In light of the foregoing, the Marine Corps requires an analysis of the effect that PPE has on survivability and mobility, in order to inform the sponsor regarding the performance of the current PPE system against a range of threats, the trade-offs between survivability (e.g., protection against small arms fire) and mobility (e.g., ability to move by foot under various loads), and the impact requirements for a future PPE system have on combat effectiveness. The study team will use the Infantry Warrior Simulation (IWARS) to simulate a basic squad in the assault scenario and explore the study's questions. The SEED Center will provide data farming support to the PPE study in the following ways: (i) create the software necessary to data farm IWARS programmatically, without human intervention; (ii) create and execute one or more IWARS experiments, as determined via meetings with the study team, and (iii) provide analysis support to the study team.
