Back Contribution of Autonomous Surface Vessels to Distributed Lethality and Supporting Communications/Data Link Requirements

Summary In FY17, DARPA/TTO funded NPS to define and develop various missions for the ASW Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program as a stepping stone towards acquisition. This effort incorporated VADM Rowden’s Distributed Lethality concept to drive requirements for autonomous behaviors and tactics, both of which demand using simulations to better understand the contribution such systems towards a successful campaign. We propose continuing this line of study for autonomous surface vessels, such as SEA HUNTER by developing scenarios and distributed lethality concepts incorporating autonomous surface vessels to identify their contribution, and from these scenarios, also define the key communications, command and control links necessary for such systems. This is an important line of study as the current concepts mirror those used for the TRITON UAV but may prove unsuitable for the missions capabilities demanded by the Distributed Lethality concept.
