Summary In FY14, with support from the Naval Studies program (OPNAV funding, with COMPACSUB as technical sponsor), NPS investigated emerging technology and techniques for a low probability of intercept (LPI) periscope radar. The objective was to examine radar architectures that could perform at or above the current on-board radar system specifications, and minimize the radar’s susceptibility to uncooperative intercept receivers (NCIRs). The proposed objective in FY15 includes refining the radar design using an end-to-end simulation (which was started in FY14), and adding a secure communication link to the system, thereby making it multifunction. The proposed radar and communication bands would be slightly separated in frequency.
