Summary This collaborative proposal between Miami University and the Naval Postgraduate School requests funding to conduct research that will lead to the development of virtual reality systems that can instead be brought to the user in the trunk of a car and set up in the time it takes to strap on a backpack. The systems would allow multiple users to be immersed simultaneously using a single tracking area and could be used in any large indoor or outdoor area such as a gymnasium or parking lot. Users would move through virtual worlds by naturally walking or running and be able to walk for miles in a virtual world without ever becoming aware of the physical limits of the tracking space or the actual physical location of other users. A system capable of immersing a single user would cost an order of magnitudes less than the current systems. The type of Head Mounted Display (HMD) used would be the primary determining factor in overall cost. For each user, an additional system would be required.
