Summary The objectives of this effort are to create specific visual media analysis methods and to improve the quality of tools that can semi-automatically produce such methods. This directly benefits both the grant sponsor and any US Navy image and video analysis effort, be it for media from space, for UAV reconnaissance, or for forensic media analysis for intel purposes. The specific methods will be chosen based on sponsor and analyst needs, possibly influenced by NPS student availability and interest. Method capabilities will be, for example, object detection in images, image classification by scene, and semantic video pre-processing for easier human analysis. A framework of middleware, tools, and methods has been developed previously to facilitate the semi-automated creation of object detectors. This unique and powerful framework has also been integrated into course material to the mutual benefit of students, sponsor, and USN. This framework will be extended and its quality improved to further reduce the time between the request for a media analysis method and the delivery of usable functionality.
