Summary We propose to design, produce, characterize and develop theoretical framework for broadband metamaterials used for Counter Directed Energy Weapons (CDEW). This project would build on NPS’s recent successful fabrication of passive narrowband metamaterial sensors with high absorption in microwave regime. The work utilized NPS expertise in modeling and experimental characterization of THz metamaterials as well as theoretical expertize in electromagnetic theory and modeling of propagation of electromagnetic waves. Metamaterials, consisting of a solid and patterned metal layers separated by a dielectric spacer layer, have highly tunable spectral response and are absorbent at a narrow frequency range. Metamaterials built at NPS achieve close to 70% absorption and were optimized for X-band but the concept allows expansion to other bands as well as increase in absorption.
