Back Advancing Pathways to Net Zero for the Operational Navy

Fiscal Year 2023
Division Research & Sponsored Programs
Department Naval Research Program
Investigator(s) Fletcher, Kristen
Sponsor NPS Naval Research Program (Navy)
Summary In 2021-2022, this interdisciplinary team undertook a broad study of strategies to achieve net zero global emissions by 2050 for the operational Navy. In Year 2, researchers propose to build on this research to move from pathways identification to prioritization and operationalization. The team will develop requirements for priority pathways to identify ways to operationalize them. To meet logistical challenges, researchers propose to explore policy and technology options for ensuring a reliable supply of net-zero energy in distributed operating environments and from international suppliers. The team will research the following questions: What are the most significant challenges for reaching net zero emissions for the operational Navy? What are the requirements needed to operationalize the pathways in order to meet mission and reduce emissions? The requirements engineering will use a systems analysis approach. The team will develop requirements for existing naval systems, platforms, and facilities and those likely in the future.
Deliverables include a report focused on: (1) prioritizing pathways for the operational Navy; (2) developing requirements to operationalize the pathways; and (3) ensuring a reliable supply of net-zero energy in distributed operating environments.
