Summary Operationally and intrinsically, NPS is a model environment for military and interagency academic collaboration and excellence, and with its significant contingent of foreign military students, is a showcase for American values. NPS recently received SECNAV and CNO support to establish precedent setting interdisciplinary degree programs in Energy Science, Technology, Policy and Economics designed to educate the future cadre of "energy professionals" for DoD. Energy is one of the many non-traditional security challenges facing the nation this century, along with food and waste security. Using the tools of system and complexity science, military leaders can better understand today's complex strategic environment and conduct better informed and far-sighted strategic planning. This Chair and the research it supports will employ system thinking and system dynamics to demonstrate the value of strategic planning in quantitatively assessing the complex challenges that impact the Department of Defense and our broader national interest.
