Summary |
The undersea warfare community owns, and will continue to acquire, platforms and capabilities beyond those of the previous submarine community. Given the dwindling of surface resupply capabilities and the advances in communications/denial of communications/distributed lethality, over the decades since the last mature submarine resupply capability existed, Now, with unmanned undersea sensors playing an increased role there is a new emerging requirement that allows these assets to be deployed, retrieval of data, energy replenishment, maintenance on scene to name a few characteristics. So the primary question is, how, in future fights, will the undersea warfare community be resupplied, and how will they assist in resupplying other members of the joint theater force? This analysis of options will investigate performance of logistics resupply for a distributed, agile undersea force in Phase 0-2 environments and how the undersea warfare community will both benefit from, and contribute to, this effort. A new force structure may be required, and an Internet of Things approach to assignment of logistics support defined. As one OR professor discussed with this researcher, it is a problem of 'capacitated team orienteering problem with time windows and synchronization.' It also comes with a sense of urgency per the CNO's note of 19 Jan 2021 'Transforming Naval Logistics for Great Power Competition.' |
