Back Finescale Dynamics of the Double-Diffusive Thermocline

Summary We propose a comprehensive program of theoretical and modeling studies of finescale double-diffusive dynamics. A hierarchy of numerical models, which include direct numerical simulations (DNS), parametric finescale models and basin-scale simulations, will be analyzed to reveal the key physical processes operating in the double-diffusive environment. Numerical modeling will be supplemented by analytical studies of the interaction between primary (microscale) and secondary (finescale) double-diffusive patterns. Analytical progress is expected from the application of multiscale methods, which are ideally suited for this task due to their transparency and ability to represent interactions between phenomena operating on distinct spatial and temporal scales. Inferences from the numerical and theoretical models will be used to interpret oceanographic fine- and microscale measurements. The combination of these approaches will double-diffusive microstructure, the finescale patterns it generates and maintains, and even larger scales of motion.
