Summary Our vision is to integrate local, private sector shipping perspectives into the national picture for the sharing of threat information. Our specific goal is to increase interactions between government and private sector shipping and deliver actionable recommendations for improving information flow across the supply chain. Our industry partners will include representatives from the maritime, air, trucking, and rail industries. The desired outcome is interagency, intermodal recommendations for improving information sharing with the shipping industry. To accomplish our objectives, MIST partners with local security stakeholders to uncover social and operational issues that impact information sharing across the supply chain. Our research methods are based on "participatory action research" where relevant parties are actively engaged in examining the issues in order to change and improve them. MIST research activities include private sector workshops, on-site studies, and a variety of community bridging activities at individual cities across the United States. Partnering with air, maritime, trucking, and rail security professionals, we answer the following questions:
- Why is information shared? What are the benefits to the shipping industry?
- What kind of information is needed? What's the best way to give and receive information?
- How can relations with the private sector be improved? Which interactions or policies cause difficulty?
- What are local best practices in information sharing? How can collaboration be improved?
