Investigator(s) Everton, Sean F.
Sponsor Federal Bureau of Investigation (Other-Fed)
Summary The CORE Lab will facilitate two outreach and education events for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This will be a two-part training event with the first iteration lasting four days. Students will learn the theory and methodology of Social Network Analysis. They will begin the development of an SNA project to include building out a research based approach to map the social network. The second training event will last three days with a focus on data structuring and cleaning to create network maps as a way to inform crime reduction strategies.
The CORE Lab SNA for LE curriculum consists of a daily mixture of interactive briefs that introduce participants to SNA theory and application, vignettes on social media and SNA, lab exercises that apply a wide range of SNA techniques to social media and nightly readings. It will end with final exercise presented by the participants and will fuse theory and techniques.
The proposed schedule for the first, four-day training (Tuesday to Friday) is as follows:
- Day 1 (0900-1600) Theory and Methods of SNA
- Day 2 (0900-1600) Introduction to the Phantom software package and project development
- Day 3 (0900-1600) Four Metric Family Instructions
- Day 4 (0900-1300) Presentation of Final Projects and Review
The proposed schedule for the second three-day session (Wednesday to Friday) is as follows:
- Day 1 (0900-1600) Review and project status updates. Introduction to data structuring.
- Day 2 (0900-1600) Advanced education on the four metric families and application methods.
- Day 3 (0900-1300) Student defined special topics
The sponsor will provide the classroom for the training. The classroom will need to have a power cord, projector and screen/display device for the trainers. The classroom should be equipped with adequate power so that the students are not running the laptops off batteries. The students will be required to install free software provided by the CORE Lab (ORA v2.3.6) onto the laptop and may need administrative rights to do so. This training will be at an unclassified level unless otherwise defined by the FBI representative.
