Summary A joint U.S.-Norwegian acoustic propagation experiment across the entire Arctic ocean will be conducted summer 2019 to summer 2020 entitled the Coordinated Arctic Acoustic Thermometry Experiment (CAATEX). The Norwegian partner is the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) in Bergen, led by Hanne Sagen. In the Eurasian basin of the Arctic NERSC will deploy two large aperture vertical array receiver moorings and a transceiver mooring hosting a 35 Hz source and a vertical receiving array. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography will deploy an identical set of moorings in the Canada basin so that transmissions will be received both within and between the western and eastern basins. The Naval Postgraduate School will provide oceanographic instrumentation on all 6 of the moorings to obtain depth time series of temperature, salinity and pressure for the purpose of monitoring local oceanographic conditions and to facilitate acoustic signal processing. The U.S.-Norwegian partnership provides a unique opportunity that will enable acoustic remote sensing of the Arctic ocean for comparison to and extension of previous measurements in the quickly changing Arctic environment.
