Summary The goal of this proposal is to investigate leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging cognitive computing toolsets to optimize global materiel distribution and delivery for all classes of supply to ensure availability of mission critical assets. Naval logisticians have manually coordinated materiel movement across a global supply chain, often culminating in replenishments at sea, to achieve optimized delivery of assets to maximize operational availability. Many applications use the state-of-the-art big data, deep analytics, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) methods. The optimization AI is to conduct large-scale optimization may result in better solutions that human analysts manually come up with. Therefore, an optimization AI will be a good assistant modern logisticians to adopt new warfighting concepts of operations (CONOPS), effectiveness of materiel delivery may be compromised as a result of increased demands over ever-larger geographic operating areas by quickly conducting optimal routing with multivariate constraints may yield more efficacious delivery schemes than those currently available. The goal of the research proposal to develop a model concept for a logistician’s optimization AI.
Objectives/Questions:
- Are there commercial off the shelf cognitive computing tools that are currently mature enough to prioritize and coordinate materiel delivery?
- Can factors CLF Logistics Officers (CLO) consider when prioritizing and coordinating replenishments at sea be instantiated in an automated tool?
Deliverables include a research report and presentation; demonstration of the live feed using the developed models at an exercise event and a publication to a journal or conference.
