Back Graphene Research Roadmap in Support of US Marine Corps Expeditionary Energy
Fiscal Year | 2014 |
Division | Graduate School of Engineering & Applied Science |
Department | Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering |
Investigator(s) | Luhrs, Claudia C. |
Sponsor | Marine Corps Systems Command (Marine Corps) |
Summary |
This project will focus on applications of graphene that can support the US Marine Corps Expeditionary Energy Program. The long term goal of the project is to develop materials or systems that could enable the capabilities of expeditionary operations. However, with the feedback of the US Marine Corps, this project will accomplish also a shorter term goal: to set the roadmap for future efforts on the use of graphene in order to direct attention and resources to the topics of more relevance to combat effectiveness. NPS is a demonstrated leader in some areas of graphene research, such as synthesis, characterization and testing. Faculty members have developed at least 2 (patents pending) methods for graphene fabrication and the key materials characterization instruments to study its structure and properties are in place. We also have the human resources, highly skilled and motivated students, to grow the program as needed. The enterprise aligns with the long term vision to enable field operations, such as the use of energy storage systems for transportable electronic devices, and addresses other critical areas, such as vulnerabilities, exemplified by the development of gas sensors. |
