Summary Addressing the tradeoffs and compounding inaccuracy of benchmark methods (dead reckoning, use of onboard sonar, waypoint mapping, use of inertial navigation units and surfacing to gain accurate coordinates), this research proposes to investigate deterministic artificial intelligence including learning that can be analytically demonstrated to be optimal. In order to facilitate UUV operator trust, learned quantities will include quantities based in physics. The newly developed methods will be proposed in direct comparison to other proposed methods in the literature to ascertain those most likely to provide seminal advantage to future warfighting.
