Summary | The purpose of this research is to use the model-based systems engineering approach to the conceptual development of a counter-satellite capability to improve survivability / assure superiority in co-orbital engagements (as part of the Space Security & Defense Program (SSDP)). Towards this goal co-orbital engagements will be modeled using No Magic Cameo Systems Modeler and SysML language integrated with MathWork Simulink and MATLAB. Once the model is created, integrated and verified, a series of trade-off studies on testing and evaluation of tactics providing the most protection to space assets while maximizing the preservation of capability will be conducted. This effort will be parallel to the Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) effort to investigate ways to defend spacecraft against attack and create a space control physics library for spacecraft maneuvering in response to a threat. The standardized AFSPC framework will be a set of spacecraft maneuver techniques to gain advantage relative to another spacecraft. NPS will work with the Orbital Engagement Maneuver (OEM) Integrated Validation Team (IVT) to aid in the development of these tactics with further thorough testing and evaluation of the developed in computer and hardware-in-the-loop-simulations. This study will look at both intercept and rendezvous tactics. The latter can also be considered from the standpoint of co-orbit capture of either a foe satellite or malfunctioning satellite that run out of fuel or exhibits mechanical failures. The specific scenarios will be agreed upon with AFSPC/TE (Testing & Evaluation). |
