Summary | In order to synthesize new metal nanocomposites and achieve maximum control over their desired properties, we anticipate installing a research-grade cold spray unit in the material science laboratory at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). Performing cold spray on-site not only enables cutting-edge research at NPS, but also allows officer students to actively participate in the research and become familiar with materials and technologies that will be critical to the Navy in the near future. The requested funding will be used to purchase and install a research-grade cold spray unit at NPS. Selection criteria for the anticipated cold-spray system are I) type of metals that can be sprayed, 2) flexibility of cold spray conditions, 3) process control, and 4) process automation. Once the cold spray unit has been installed and is fully operational, a series of tests will be performed in order to identify the optimal working conditions. |
