Summary |
Intermittent energy supply is a problem with renewable source and is normally solved with battery backup but for high energy consumption application, heating being one, a targeted energy storage method may be cheaper and safer. A renewable powered heating system will be demonstrated. Combined wind and solar power will power a two stage heating system. The first stage will use a heat pump and/or available chiller waste heat to provide low grade heating to the municipal heating supply. This partially heated first stage water will be heated in the second stage using electrical heating. A two tank final hot stage will ensure that hot water is always available even when the renewable energy supply is intermittent. This project is sponsored under the Energy Systems Technical Evaluation Program (ESTEP) which focuses on demonstrations of technology that will reduce the Navy's and wider DoD's Energy Costs. |
