Summary MTN approach is message-centric (MC). It's based on "message/transmission format" translations. Some combat systems have adopted data-centric (DC) approach, a dramatic improvement from MC to switching to distributed relational data representation. With all the novelty behind DC, its niche is niche market is a Control. DC visualization approach is based on transactional overlays bringing the data clutter affecting the quality and speed of the commanders' decision making. Novel information exchange approach is needed for Data-to-Decisions (D2D) Big Data paradigm to resolve:
- Inability to do lossless data mapping across dissimilar TDLs due to the hardwired nature of MC data forwarders/gateways. STANAG-5616/MIL-STD-6020 link, standard for data forwarding between tactical data systems employing Links 11/11B and tactical data systems employing Link 16, may lose single link platform information in translation.
- Significant labor-intensive effort to develop point-to-point (P2P) TDL translators.
- Proliferation of versions of "message formats/transmission formats" driving up labor expenses to change message parsers, which are hardcoded within the apps
- Transformation of meaning during the transformation of data.
- Lack of "message/transmission data model" to store correlated/fused information.
- Inability to represent information at multiple levels of abstraction/aggregation needed for Decision Making Machine-to-Human / Human-to-Machine interfaces.
- Inability of messages to express graphs and scientific data resulting in mixing MC approach with file-centric (FC) approach based on secure FTP and alike protocols
