Sponsor | Naval Research Laboratory (Navy) |
Summary | Mathematics, including computational algorithms, numerical and programming skills, data processing, and analysis methodologies have been widely used in numerical weather prediction (NWP). In the Department of Applied Mathematics (MA) at Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), teaching and training materials are available on topics such as Galerkin methods, distributed computing, the calculus of variation, nonlinear filtering, computational optimization, etc. These topics are all critical to data assimilation and atmospheric modeling. Several faculty members in MA/NPS are active experts on these topics. At NRL, researchers oftentimes have the needs to refresh their mathematical skills or update their knowledge on related topics. The proposed NPS-NRL collaboration on education and professional development will meet the needs of NRL by providing the opportunities to NRL researchers of participating training projects and/or partial courses. Different from enrolled students, the NRL researchers have the flexibility to take an exercise projects, or participate a short session of training, or audit a part of the class, without the need to get a grade. The close proximity of NPS is particularly convenient for such purpose of math skill update and refreshment. |
