Back Vector Field Studies in Shallow Water and in the Presence of 3-D Variability

Summary The goals of this work are a continuation of the FY16 efforts to study the flow of energy in the acoustic field in shallow water and 3-D environments. One goal will be to examine the information that is available from point measurements of the directional noise field, collected during FY15-16, and potential applications of this data for geoacoustic inversion. Another goal will be to improve our understanding of the significance of 3-D propagation effects and quantify their relative importance in areas of interest. Particular focus will be placed on propagation in littoral regions and in continental shelf canyons, and how well we can predict the intensity (direction of energy flow) and signal variability (horizontal refraction and impact on horizontal coherence) due to remote sources. An additional goal will be to characterize the accuracy of new directional acoustic modems in tracking and localizing autonomous underwater systems in shallow water.
