Summary This is a continuing research with collaborative efforts between NPS and NSWCCD to address the present as well as future technical needs and challenges for naval structures. The previous focus of research has been placed on joining technology of composite materials as well as composite to metal structures. The present research will study the layered composite patching technology for sensitized and/or cracked metallic structures, especially aluminum alloy structures in CG class ships. The present research has two objectives. One is to develop a guideline for an optimal composite patch and the other is to devise a crack growth monitoring technique or a sensor which can be embedded between the patched composites and the cracked base structure. Additionally, the emphasis of research may change as a new need or challenge develops in close consultation with NSWCCD.
