Summary The marine boundary layer aerosol affects the transmittance of electromagnetic waves by extinction. This in turn affects the operations the Navy by impeding signal transmission and detection of low flying objects. Visibility is reduced and radar and laser transmissions are attenuated. Quantitatively this depends on aerosol particle concentration, particle size distribution, particle shapes and chemical composition. The objective of the experiment is to measure these quantities using ship based sensors, and collect aerosol samples for later analyses.
