Summary Because of their perverseness and the Navy's dependence on MCSes, especially in shipboard systems, this work can have a quiet impact on both the cyber systems and the physical systems that they control.
- Objective 1: Determine if there are substantive differences between the lifecycle processes that should be applied to MCSes compared to those applicable to more traditional software/hardware systems, e.g. operating systems. As part of this process identify unnecessary and additional lifecycle processes exclusive to the MCS domain.
- Objective 2: Based upon an understanding of the lifecycle threats to MCSes, identify lifecycle processes that are absent from the first results.
- Objective 3: Apply abstraction and commonalities among MCSes to formulate the requirements for coherent lifecycle processes for these systems.
- Objective 4: Adapt the developmental security techniques created for high assurance software systems for use in the creation of MCSes.
