Summary Within this effort, NPS will continue to develop both a lightweight transparent face shield and an opaque face shield incorporating a camera system to enable operator to "see through" opaque barrier. Face shields will be capable of defeating NIJ level IV threats with a high mass efficiency. Both face shields will be integrated into current tactical helmets with the ability to both raise and lower as well as distribute impact energy from a bullet throughout helmet system. Transparent face shield efforts will focus on transparent ceramics integrated with impedance matched and energy absorbing backing materials. The opaque armor face shield will incorporate current ESAPI materials with an optical imaging system mounted onto the helmet and transferring the image to the operator.
