Summary Commercial and military ships are complex combinations of cyber-physical systems (CPS). These systems use networked computers of varying type and complexity to communicate between and control the shipboard navigation, ship control, weapons (if applicable), propulsion and steering, and radio frequency systems. Thus, while vital ship systems are highly interconnected, they are frequently lightly protected.
This project investigates many components installed on, or capable of being installed on, ships with a goal of understanding their communications methods, capabilities, and vulnerabilities to cyberattack. Improved knowledge of the systems deployed on our ships will improve our ability to harden existing Navy CPS, procure more defensible systems, and make our ships resilient to cyberattack.
