Back Concurrent Atmosphere and Ocean Boundary Layer Observations from Remote Ice-Deployed Buoys

Summary This proposed research is a supplement to the NPS autonomous ocean flux buoys (AOFB) deployments that will be conducted as part of the ONR Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) DRI. At planning meetings held in May and November of 2012, and the subsequent MIZ science plan, a lack of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) turbulent flux measurements was identified as a gap in the MIZ DRI observations. Here we propose to make these ABL observations by developing a basic. autonomous ABL flux measurement system that is tightly integrated with our existing AOFBs. taking advantage of the funded surface infra-structure and complimentary ocean boundary layer flux measurements. These ABL measurements will provide long term concurrent atmosphere and ocean boundary layer measurements resulting in a valuable ABL dataset for other MIZ DRI investigators.
