Summary The project will develop a numerical model of a Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Machine (MEMS) scale turbomachine. This turbomachine is a multistage device designed to draw a strong vacuum. The device will allow vacuums to be drawn within hand held
sized devices. This has applications in handheld size chemicals detection and medical devices. The company Honeywell will be supplying the geometry of the devices and undertaking the manufacturing. The Naval Postgraduate school will provide the expertise in the high pressure continuum regime to calculate the initial starting power and prediction of initial pumping to see if the device will work and aid in any required design changes.
