Summary Operationally and intrinsically, NPS is a model environment for military and interagency academic collaboration and excellence, and with its significant contingent of foreign military students, is a showcase for American values. NPS has received SECNAV and CNO support to establish precedent setting interdisciplinary degree programs in Energy Science, Technology, Policy and Economics designed to educate the future cadre of "energy professionals" for DoD. By systemically addressing energy sustainability, the degree programs will further DoD Energy Security objectives and meet the intent of congressional language that mandates DoD attention to critical energy issues. Sustainable energy is one of the defining challenges of the 21st Century, but cannot be successfully addressed in isolation of other global trends. This Chair will address other complex challenges in addition to energy, such as maritime security, cyber security, global agriculture/food security, and transformative education, particularly as these issues impact the Department of Defense.
