Summary The energy management system (EMS) developed in the past few years at the Naval Postgraduate School controls the active and reactive power flow in distributed resources and loads. Distributed resources include energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) panels and energy storage such as batteries and ultracapacitors. The goal of this project is to identify which power converter topology is most efficient to interface PV panels to the EMS and to store its energy efficiently. Ultracapacitors will be considered as well as batteries for energy storage. Additional goals include embedding a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm and refine the secondary EMS controller to harvest solar energy.
