Summary This study will identify effective stress-optimization and recovery techniques from a holistic whole-person, primary prevention perspective. The study will be the first of a planned two-study effort, with the second study to be proposed in a subsequent program cycle. For this initial study, the research team will conduct a systematic literature review to identify feasible alternatives to the existing techniques that may be suitable for Navy contexts. We will also survey sailors to identify the prevalence of the behavioral techniques used to manage stress, and Sailors' attitudes towards using them. The findings will facilitate refinement of the curriculum to navigate stress and the training for Engaged Deckplate Leaders to enhance their ability to provide whole-Sailor primary prevention and improve the resilience/performance of their Sailors. As a second, follow-on study, will be proposed to assess the recommendations and provide the optimum dosage and frequency of stress optimization and recovery techniques. This research will support the Culture of Excellence (COE) goal to foster toughness, trust, and connectedness throughout the Fleet and build a more lethal warfighting force. To meet this goal, the Navy needs to better understand how to empower Sailors to tolerate and recover from stress.
